THE ARTFUL GARDEN

"The Artful Garden" is a metaphor suggesting how we can sow seeds of creative ideas. Gardens start with small seeds, much like ideas and art. They both need to be fed, nurtured and loved in order to thrive. This "garden" is a safe place to be both inspired and inspiring to others. It is a way to share who you are and promote forward movement within your life. A way to realize that you are not alone. Please join our "conversation" any time by posting your thoughts, questions and ideas in the comment section of
"the garden."

discussion question (5)

Do the holidays help or hinder your creativity? Are you inspired by any of the many different forms of creativity that surround us this time of year?

(view from the inn that Danielle and I stayed at in Sedona~not too bad, eh? )

Hello everyone!
I hope that everyone had a very nice holiday and that you are all doing well. I realized that I never posted my thoughts before I left for NH for Christmas. I think that around the holidays a different kind of creativity comes out of me that is more what one might consider "crafty" although I often wonder if people consider "crafts" different than "art". I think that I thought of them differently for a long time but believe that the bridges are being crossed between craft and fine art right now. It is actually an exciting time to be investigating the arts where it seems that "anything goes". Media is being crossed everywhere you look and I will be excited to see what mark the arts leave on history from our generation. Has anyone else thought about this or noticed any trends in the arts?

The art that I have been creating has been a series of small paintings. I had taken a printmaking glass in the Fall and made a series of what they call ghost prints from collographs that I created. (collographs are made by gluing different textures to a board or paper-they can be realistic or abstract. A ghost print is when you run the collograph through the printing press with a damp piece of paper on top of it and it leaves an indentation in the paper of all the textures) I loved the way that the textures from the collographs looked on the paper but I wanted a little bit of color, so I decided to paint just a part of them.

I was also very excited to spend some time with my five year old niece, Julia while I was in NH. We painted a bunch of ornaments together and had so much fun!

I get inspired by all of the handmade cards and crafts that I see at fairs and in shops this time of year as well. Sometimes I will see something that I like and bookmark it in my brain and it will appear in something down the road. My friend, Sarah who I worked with at DCS made a gorgeous Christmas card for me that she said that I could post. It reminded me of all the cards that I made while I was teaching, often inspired by the kids this time of year. She told me that she was inspired by a pen and ink lesson that she was teaching. These are the times that I miss being in the classroom and being exposed to that energy and inspiration.

Peace and love in the New Year! love, Laura
