"Love is the essential ingredient, and to live fully engaged with the heart is our ultimate expression. Living Artfully is living heartfully."
~Sandra Magsamen
I stumbled upon these heart rocks on one of my walks. Someone had left them as a mini sculpture on top of a large rock on the beach. You never know how a random act like this can effect someone's day.

I have been thinking a lot about how my art could be an act of kindness towards others. This is a very different way of thinking and working, as I have always thought of myself as more of a modern impressionist painter. Being at Goddard continues to challenge my perceptions of what art is and can be. This week I am going to make a gentle movement towards sharing some of my "Guerilla artwork" with all of you groovy artists. I will be curious what you think and if you have any other ideas for me. Until then....xoLaura
I am often pleasantly surprised when I go to the garden. I love this photo. I collect heart rocks. It started one very cold day in January when my daughter, Emma, had gotten out of the hospital. She was there for over three weeks because we found out she had leukemia. She was three and a half years old. (She is doing great and in High School now!)
The first thing she wanted to do when she got out was go to the beach. So we bundled her and 8 month old Zachary up, and went to the beach!! There was not a lot of snow that year and they actually were able to play in the sand and we found a black heart shaped rock. I took it as a good sign and we have been collecting them since. I just brought a BIG one home from Scotland! Almost made my suitcase go over the legal weight limit.
I love that somebody left those for others.
Laura, would love to see your artwork!

i have heard a little bit about this guerilla appoach you are taking by intersecting your life's path with the travels of others and think it is such a unique and uplifting idea. i would love to see some of it and one day encounter it on my own on one of those days when i need it most : ) by bringing quiet thoughtfulness into the lives of others with your work it sounds to me like ~ you have a true understanding of how art can be such a special gift.

I too collect heart rocks and have even lugged a large one back from Martha's Vineyard in a backpack on the ferry. And I thought that was far! I didn't feel like I could take these though. One of my friends told me that she collected them as well and then when she found love she decided that she should leave them for other people to find who might need them. I loved how she thought about it like that but still get totally excited when I find one!
I am also so glad that your daughter is doing so well. Are you still adjusting to her being away so much for school? Are you still hiking?
hi all,
this is what i always thought guerilla art is....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_art. or at least something along those lines....
so i guess it threw me when laura mentioned "acts of kindness" towards others in the same breath as "guerilla" artwork.
"The production of guerrilla art is focused on cause and effect, not the material piece itself. It aims to produce an effect within the minds of those people that live within the environment being altered. It does not necessarily aim to produce art that is meaningful in itself."
i think it's great to run with the idea of creating public pieces of art that make people feel good. guerilla art is supposed to make people think, so why not make them think happy thoughts...or just feel happy, calm, peaceful or perhaps even grateful? looking forward to your interpretation, laura! although, in all fairness, such happy-stances may need to be called "fuzzy bunny" artwork. ;-)
